"Mind sports viz. Chess, Weiqi and Xiangqi have long been considered intellectual games that can enhance one’s cognitive and character development.  More than just pitting mental ability, they are a test of patience, determination, courage and creativity, attributes central to the spirit of innovation and enterprise (I&E). 

The key objectives of the Programme are:

a) To promote the development of cognitive skills such as problem-solving, logical and strategic thinking, creativity, concentration and memory

b) To cultivate positive traits such as resilience, determination, independence and courage to take calculated risks

c) To serve the local community and build a cultural relationship and friendship with the global community

The efforts put in by the school have been rewarded.  With a good track record of excellent performance, NYPS received the Primary School Excellence Award in Mind Sports in 2007. This year, I am very excited that Mr Olimpiu, an internationally acclaimed chess master who has been working with our school for the past four years, has joined us as a permanent staff to continue developing our niche area in mind sports.  I am confident that with his guidance and the dedication and support from teachers and parents, and the perseverance and diligence of our pupils, our mind sports team will grow from strength to strength! "
