Two Top Trophies for NYPS @ Cairnhill International Chess Festival





Sheryln-Lynn Tan & Shae-Lynn Tan participated in the Minor Rapid of the Cairnhill International Chess Festival (5-6 Dec, 2009) held at Cairnhill Community Club. The NYPS twin sisters won the Gold and Silver trophies in G-U8 section with 4.5 pts out of 6 rounds. Congratulations!

NYPS @ 10th New Generation Chess Tournament









Nearly 300 children island-wide took part in the 10th New Generation Chess Tournament (Civil Service Club, 29 Nov) organized by ASEAN Chess Academy. Some NYPS pupils did well in several categories: Diamond & Pearl Category (the toughest one) - Isaak Ethan Soh took the Silver and Gerald Chan Hiang Yong took the Bronze; Soo Kai Jie finished 9th and earned a top-10 trophy; Newcomers U12 - Natania Ng clinched the 10th place; Newcomers U10 - William Guo Shi Yu won the Silver trophy.
The chess club thanks also those who fought in the toughest section although qualified for the lower rated ones. Players like Jonathan & John Cheong, Rachel Soh, Shannon Chan, Elliot San, Krystal Soh, Gerald Wong, Gabriel Tan, Sze Shao Hong, Sheryl-Lynn & Shae-Lynn Tan, Bruce Xu, Gerlyn Wong should be all commended for their efforts.

Garry Kasparov - Speaker at
Youth Engagement Summit (YES 2009)

Garry Kasparov, the former world chess champion, was one of the key speakers during the Youth Engagement Summit (16-17 Nov, 2009) held in Kuala Lumpur. The theme of the summit was change and Kasparov spoke of how the skills developed through a study of chess can be used for success in life and help young people to continuously adapt to the permanent change that dominates today's world. Here is a brief report on Kasparov's speech.

NYPS' Michelle in Team Singapore for
World Youth Chess Championships 2009









Michelle Ho (Nanyang Primary) was one of the 13 Singapore junior players selected to represent Singapore at World Youth Chess Championships 2009 held in Turkey between 12 and 21 November. Michelle played in Girls U-12 category and faces tough opposition from 108 players from more than 60 countries. The official website offers excellent information, videos, pictures and games. NYPS Chess Club congratulates Michelle for a good fight.

Yuan Weiting & Nathan Mar win
Nanyang Chess Challenge 2009










On November 7, Nanyang Chess Challenge 2009 was held in our school. The event brought together 106 pupils. Yuang Weiting (P6) won the Upper Primary section and Nathan Mar (P2) won the Lower Primary section.  NYPS Chess Club would like to thank the Nanyang teachers and Nanyang parent volunteers for their help. The club also gave away two appreciation awards to Mr Vice-Principal (Admin) Loh Por Yuh and Mdm Vice-Principal Jocelyn Lim (pictured above with Yuan Weiting and the Nanyang Challenge Cup) for their support.

Nanyang's Derek Lim,
Selected to Represent Singapore in
ASEAN Primary Schools Sports Olympiad 2009 (Chess)









Nanyang Primary's Derek Lim, the Club's strongest chess player, has been selected by SCF to represent Singapore during the ASEAN Primary Schools Sports Olympiad 2009 (Chess) to be held in Jakarta (Indonesia) between 3 and 9 November 2009.
NYPS Chess Club congratulates Derek and assures him of Nanyang's chess players support throughout the competition.

NYPS Wins 5 out of top 10 Places in
Children's Day Chess Challenge 2009









During the Children's Day Chess Challenge 2009, held at Civil Service Club on September 27, NYPS pupils won five out of the ten top prizes. Here are the full results. Further details and a pictorial will follow soon.

NYPS v Yateley Manor (England)
Correspondence Game









Nanyang Primary School started a correspondence game with Yateley Manor School (Hampshire, UK), one of the British schools with an excellent chess tradition. The rate of play will be 2 moves per week. NYPS Chess Club members (P1-P6) are encouraged to email us their original move suggestions. The Club's Playing Committee, headed by Wu Muyu, will decide upon the moves to be played each week. The game may be followed in the column in the right on daily basis.

Nanyang Primary Wins
"Best School Challenge Cup" @ 50th National Inter-Schools & 4 Gold Trophies!










For this year' edition of National Inter-Schools Team Chess Championships 2009, an event that brings together the biggest number and the best schools island-wide, NYPS sent 15 teams to compete on Sunday, 30 August. NYPS won an unprecedented number of 4 Gold trophies (Boys Open, Girls Open, Boys U11, Boys U9) and 1 Silver trophy (Boys U9). Nanyang Primary also won the "Best School" Challenge Cup awarded to the best results achieved by a Primary School during this event.  Nanyang Chess Club congratulates all teams for the outstanding effort on behalf of Nanyang Primary School. Important Announcement!
List of NYPS Players Selected for Inter-Schools 2009









Please check the list with the players selected to form teams and represent NYPS in the 50th National Inter-Schools (30 August 2009).  Those selected are kindly asked to email us promptly to confirm their participation in this event. Please send us a prompt email specifying the exact Date-of-Birth, too.
NYPS teachers-in-charge plan to register all teams by Friday evening, 14 August 2009.
Update: Selected Players must attend the following training/briefing sessions: Tue (25 Aug), Thu (27 Aug), Fri (28 Aug); Hours: 2,00 - 4,00 PM. Class 3G - meeting point.

NYPS Boys & Girls top National Inter-Clubs (Division 2)!














As preparation for the forthcoming Inter-Schools, between 7 and 10 August 2009, NYPS Chess Club had 3 teams competing in National Inter-Clubs (Division 1 & 2) held at Teck Ghee CC and organised by Singapore Chess Federation. In Division 1, NYPS CC (Boys1) finished a respectable 4th in a tough field. In Division 2, NYPS CC (Boys2 and Girls) won the Gold and Silver trophies with remarkable match scores leaving behind once again the rivals from Northland Primary.

3 Top Prizes for NYPS Pupils @ National Rapid Challengers 2009









Not many of NYPS'strongest chess players took part in this year's National Rapid Chess Championship (Challengers), 1-2 Aug 2009.  Yet,  when the battle of wits between the 215 contestants came to an end, there were some good news:  Nathan Mar finished 1st in BoysU8 (Nathan also finished on the 11th overall position!);  Michelle Ho finished as the 1st female player and also as the 1st in GirlsU12. Gerald Chan finished 3rd in BoysU12;  In addition, Nicholas Ang (finished 4th - BoysU10) and Siow Lih Jiang (finished 5th in BoysU8) came very close to the top three prizes.
A special metion deserves Derek Lim - the only primary pupil who constantly plays alongside masters in upper sections. NYPS Chess Club congratulates the winners and the participants.
