NYPS Chess Club thanks Mdm Principal Heng Boey Hong

Dear Mdm Principal  Heng Boey Hong :

Out of all pieces on the chessboard, they say the King is the most important. But, for about five centuries now, it is the Queen that does most of the hard work. Aided by her seemingly endless energy, she goes to great length to protect her own and help them advance.  Under her care and leadership, the team gains in confidence. Often she sacrifices itself for the greater good. That explains why the youngest disciples of the game (much like the new waves of P1s in our school) get a very early attachment to this piece. They treasure her immensely. That is also why they feel lost and hopeless and she gets captured prematurely. Finally, that is why when a pawn reaches to the opponent’s back rank, with much joy in their eyes, they promote it into a Queen without any proper consideration for other options. They feel she offers them protection, guidance, leadership and a tangible guarantee of success.

Mdm Principal: since 2001 you have been the Queen of the NYPS chess club. Your continuous support for mind sports in our school inspired entire generations of pupils and teachers alike. There was never a more prosperous time for our chess club in all its brief history. Our school grew as the strongest primary school in chess island-wide and today stands as a model for others. Doubtlessly, without your support, guidance, care and understanding for our passion, this would not have been possible. Much like the Queen on our small universe, you stood by us both in good times - when we succeeded - and in less happier times - when we had to learn from our mistakes and get back into the game. We owe much of our club’s success to your inspiring presence in the last decade.

Learning the news of your departure to Nanyang Girls’ High we, the active members of the NYPS Chess Club, are wrapped with mixed emotions. We are happy for your advancement and we are confident that the Nanyang girls will prosper under your leadership. Simultaneously however, we cannot fail to state an uneasy feeling familiar to any chess player: we just lost our Queen. But you have taught us to be resilient, keep our heads up, remain hopeful and courageous. Even against all odds.

We heartily thank you for your years of outstanding service; for your protection, guidance, unmatched leadership and guaranteeing our success.
