On March 6, 2010, Civil Service Club & SCF hosted the Public Service Star Games Chess Championships 2010. Sixteen Ministries and Authorities sent their best chess players to compete. After several past editions in which MOE had to be satisfied with second positions, behind the powerful MOH team, this year Ministry of Education's top chess team [Junior Tay, Mark Chan, Lye Lim Chye, Seow Yong li, Olimpiu G. Urcan and Choo Tong Neo] managed to win the Gold medals. One of the six MOE players is a current NYPS staff.

26 pupils from Raghubir Singh Modern Junior School (New Dehli, India) are in a full-swing immersion trip in collaboration with Nanyang Primary. On February 9, the Indian visiting pupils were the gfuests of the NYPS Chess Club. Friendly chess games were played and a general talk on Indian chess (past & present) took place. NYPS Chess Club thanks our visitors for their exchanges with some of our chess club members and also thanks Mrs Lau Pui San (SH International Relations) for her effort.

SCF announced the selected players for the traditional Singapore vs Malaysia annual match which will take place in Kuala Lumpur between 15 and 17 February 2010. We note that 6 Nanyang pupils have been selected to be part of Team Singapore: Michelle Ho, Ethan Isaak Soh, Rachel Soh, Gerlyn Wong, Krystal Soh and Derek Lim. Tin Jingyao was also shortlisted. The match, played on 38 boards for each side, will consist of two separate trials: classic and rapid chess. We wish all selected players all the best for this traditional chess competition between the two countries.

On January 24, a number of NYPS chess players took part in the Inaugural Inter-Constituency Chess Championships (2010) organized by SCF. After 7 rounds, Tin Jingyao (4L) won the Gold U10 and Silver - overall standings; Michelle Ho (6I) - Gold GU12; Bronze - overall standings; San Yong Elliot (3J) - Silver U10; 5th - overall standings; San Ying Edith (1J) - Gold GU8 and
Wong Gerlyn (2B) - Silver GU8; Nathan Mar (3K) deserves high praise for playing in Men's Section (finished 29th). NYPS Chess Club congratulates all winners and participants.

NYPS Alumni Daniel Chan Yi-Ren
FM Daniel Chan (Anglo-Chinese School - Independent) has won the National Chess Championships for Dr. Wong Yip Chong Cup held at SCF in mid-January 2010 with 6.5 pts out of 9 rounds. Daniel left behind a number of strong International Masters and one Grandmaster. Winner of Asian Dragons (2007), former U-15 champion of the World Schools Chess Championships (2008), and an Olympic team member (2008), FM Daniel Chan is a former pupil of Nanyang Primary School. NYPS Chess Club congratulates him for his outstanding performance.

Sing!Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games - a song composing competition to honor the Youth Olympic Games - features an entry from a Nanyang pupil: "What it takes" by Tierney Lee (6D). The Nanyang's team leader is Ms Mavis Tan. Listen to the song here.

The chess lesson is from 14:00 to 15:45pm starting Thursday, 14 January.
Some assessments will be conducted on that day.
(P3 to P6)
There are 4 classes: 3D, 3G, 3I, 3H.
Chess lessons start Friday, 15 January, 14:00 to 15:45.
Further assessments will be conducted by chess trainers.
Fresh P1s and P2s (new to chess) are to meet up with teachers at the meeting point at 13:45. The rest of pupils may proceed to their respective classes.

28th National Age-Group Chess Championships were held at Northland Primary School between 28 Dec 2009 and 2 Jan 2010. NYPS pupils collected 6 top medals: Girls U8 - Sheryl-Lynn Tan tied for 1st-2nd (Gold or Silver medal); Shae-Lynn Tan took the Bronze; Girls U12 - Michelle Ho won the Gold; Open U12 - Derek Lim won the Silver and Isaak Soh won the Bronze; Girls U14 - Yuan Weiting (graduated 2009) earned the Gold. Other remarkable top-10 performances by NYPS pupils: Girls U8 - Krystal Soh (4th), Gerlyn Wong (5th), San Ying Edith (6th); Open U8 - Hu Yifeng (6th), Dillon Hoon (7th); Girls U10 - Natania Ng (7th); Open U12 - Nicholas Ho (8th), Shannon Chan (9th), Chew Jia Ming Jed (10th); Girls U12 - Rachel Soh (5th); Open U12 - Gerald Chan (6th), Sean Toh (9th), Nicholas Ang (10th); Open U14 - Wu Muyu (graduated 2009 - 7th).
Thus NYPS collected 6 top medals and 14 top-ten prizes in this national competition. Congratulations to all NYPS players.

The January 2010 US edition of TIME Magazine, contains a profile and interview with the 20-year-old chess genius Magnus Carlsen. At the age 13, Carlsen became the youngest Grandmaster in history, and at the age 18 he was ranked as number 1 player in the world.

Two Top Trophies for NYPS @ Cairnhill International Chess Festival
Sheryln-Lynn Tan & Shae-Lynn Tan participated in the Minor Rapid of the Cairnhill International Chess Festival (5-6 Dec, 2009) held at Cairnhill Community Club. The NYPS twin sisters won the Gold and Silver trophies in G-U8 section with 4.5 pts out of 6 rounds. Congratulations!

Nearly 300 children island-wide took part in the 10th New Generation Chess Tournament (Civil Service Club, 29 Nov) organized by ASEAN Chess Academy. Some NYPS pupils did well in several categories: Diamond & Pearl Category (the toughest one) - Isaak Ethan Soh took the Silver and Gerald Chan Hiang Yong took the Bronze; Soo Kai Jie finished 9th and earned a top-10 trophy; Newcomers U12 - Natania Ng clinched the 10th place; Newcomers U10 - William Guo Shi Yu won the Silver trophy and Jonathan Chee Yong Li won the Bronze trophy.The chess club thanks also those who fought in the toughest section although qualified for the lower rated ones. Players like Jonathan & John Cheong, Rachel Soh, Shannon Chan, Elliot San, Krystal Soh, Gerald Wong, Gabriel Tan, Sze Shao Hong, Sheryl-Lynn & Shae-Lynn Tan, Bruce Xu, Gerlyn Wong should be all commended for their efforts.

Garry Kasparov - Speaker at
Garry Kasparov, the former world chess champion, was one of the key speakers during the Youth Engagement Summit (16-17 Nov, 2009) held in Kuala Lumpur. The theme of the summit was change and Kasparov spoke of how the skills developed through a study of chess can be used for success in life and help young people to continuously adapt to the permanent change that dominates today's world.
