Nanyang's Staying Powers @ 63rd National Schools Individual Chess Championships
On March 16, 2011, a squad of 87 Nanyang pupils took part in the 63rd edition of the National Schools Individual Chess Championships (over a 1000 pupils island-wide), one of the biggest school tournaments of the year. At the end of a 7-round play at Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel, Nanyang Primary finished on top in terms of top medals collected. This year it was Nanyang girls' turn to support the overall performance while the boys were slightly off-form. The strong show of our girls in all age categories saved the day however: Lee Jia Claire and Neo Chloe earned the Silver and Bronze in GirlsU7; Lam Hui Xin and Edith San tied for Gold/Silver and won the Bronze in Girls U8; Krystal Soh won the Gold, followed by 4th-7th prizes won by Nanyang pupils in GirlsU9; Anna Ng and Elizabeth Fam finished 6th and 9th in GirlsU10; Lim Xiao Hui won the 10th prize in GirlsU11 and Rachel Soh tied for Gold/Silver in Girls U12 with Abigal Ng finishing 5th and Joanne Chan 8th in the same category.
Among the boys playing in the open section, best was Tin Jingyao's performance in the Open (Masters) as he finished 8th in a field of 100 competitors - all from Junior Colleges, Secondary Schools and Singapore-based Universities. The Nanyang pupil was the only primary school pupil who played in this tough section. In addition, Derek Lim won a Silver medal with Sean Masci winning the 8th position in the same category (OpenU12); Nathan Mar won the Gold and Jerome Chan finished 6th in OpenU10 with the 8th place being won by Chew Jia Ming Jed; Finally, in OpenU10, Ethan Tam secured the 10th spot for himself [prize photo attached].
The final medal tally indicates Nanyang's staying powers at the top of the ladder in Singapore's scholastic chess and a re-birth of Nanyang girls' high prestige with the game.
